Introduction
From Race Director, John Mackay:

For those of you who have not been fully inducted into to the joys of winter running with the Club, to break up the tedium of running through dark, wet, cold streets, we run a handicap series for a bit of fun (every year since 1990!!) It also gives you the chance to see how training is going because the run is timed.  Instead of going off in all directions in separate groups, we all follow the same route, with slower runners going off first and faster runners held back so that in theory everyone can finish together.

Any amendments to the official results, please contact John, who will consider to make any changes. Good luck!!

The Route

The main route:

leaves from the lamppost,
down to Green Street Green, [south on Sevenoaks Road]
past the Rose & Crown,
up to Locksbottom lights, [all the way along the A21, then turn right, onto Crofton Road]
down to the War Memorial
and back along Sevenoaks Road.

This is pretty close to a 10k route.  To help close up the handicap a bit, runners who would not expect to finish in 50 minutes have the extra advantage of cutting the corners to make it about 5 miles, with timings adjusted accordingly.

Detailed Results

Race 1: November 2008

Tonight saw the first of the season's Handicap events. There was a good turnout with nearly 80 runners setting out to beat the clock from lamp post to lamp post round the familiar 10k and 5 mile routes. It was a cold, crisp night ideal for running, if a bit chilly for those waiting at the finish.

There were some good times from some of our newer runners with Karen Kent shepherding a posse of 5 who came home ahead of everyone else. Andrew Smith was first 10k runner to finish. It was good to see Annette Shrimpton back to form with a pb having missed last year on a maternity break. Graham Maynard was fastest on the night over 10k and Kevin Abel took the honours over 5m, but he promises to be back to 10k next month. Full results in the usual place.

Many thanks to Linda, Jan, Chris, Sheila and Sue without whose help total chaos would have broken out as runners flooded over the finish line. A total of £56 was raised for our nominated charity.

Race 2: December 2008

With the promise of a very cold evening and the proximity of the festive season and the Hastings Marathon saw a smaller than usual field for tonights Handicap. Among the 56 finishers were three debutants, Rupert, Danny and Sarah, who is another welcome guest from B&B Harriers.

As it was not a night for hanging around and 30 people beat their handicap with George Bowes the first home closely followed by Jo Zegeling chasing down a 4 min handicap. John Card was the first 10k runner to finish with Guy Cowie in hot pursuit. The unhelpful roadwork on the 10k route did not help the faster runners and only Daryl and Simon broke the 40 min barrier this month.

Race 3: January 2009

There was a good turnout of 70 runners for the first Handicap of 2009. Traditionally this tends to be the slowest in the series after the Christmas excesses but despite the very cold weather recently, there has obviously been some secret training going on. About half the field beat their handicap with some good runs from some of our newer runners. Congratulations to Emma Holton who was first home in her first run with ORR. Brian Allen had a very good run, only 3 seconds slower than his best, to be the first 10k runner to finish

Rod Potter was unlucky to pull a muscle on his return to ORR and had to pull out half way round. We did not note new runner Richard Jones through the finish and we hope that all is well.

Race 4: February 2009

After all the recent bad weather, Tuesday evening turned out to be fine for running, if a bit on the cold side. The 71 runners created a fair head of steam at the finish as they handed their names in and swapped tales. Nick Beston got caught out on one slippery corner and took a tumble but manged to get to the finish accompanied by Stephen Mitchell.

There was a fair bit of haggling over start times with the feeble excuse that running had been curtailed due to the weather or the usual tweaks but most of the field came in within about a minute either side of their expected time. Some good times were registered by Dave Evans, Sophie Trimming and Gez Morgan in the 10k with George Bowes and Emma Holton doing well in the 5m. Emma broke 40 mins on corrected time and so qualifies for the full 10k next time. Simon Collins once again took fastest time for 10k chased all the way by Ian Hailes who finished just 5 secs down.

Thanks once again to Jan, Linda and Elaine for helping out and to all who contributed to the Charity Collection.

Race 5: March 2009

The rain cleared in good time and Tuesday proved to be a good night for running the last of this year's series of Handicap Races. There was a good turnout with 70 finishers and a couple of unlucky injuries. There was evidently some rivalry at the sharp end of the field with a couple of very competitive groups going off 9 and 11 min handicaps. Simon Collins and Graham Maynard were stride for stride finishing in 37.11, SBs for both. Generational rivalry can also work wonders, Trevor Delahoy did see son Tim pass him on his first Handicap but Trevor chased him all the way to take over a Minute off his PB. Adam Enock also did well on his first Handicap but Eric gave him no quarter - this time. Helen Boud was first home having begged a favourable start time due to feeling unwell but running only 20secs under her PB, the marathon training is obviously paying off.

So that is it for another year, thanks once again to Graham, Sheila, Elaine & Ted for their help at the finish and roll on the lighter evenings.
