2009:
Muscular Dystrophy Campaign
It has been decided by vote that this years
charity of the year is going to be the Muscular
Dystrophy Campaign, which was initially
nominated by Louise Whyte. Here are some more
details about the charity ....
"
The charity I am involved with is the Muscular
Dystrophy Campaign which we set up with our
friends Paul and Julie when their son Luke was
diagnosed with the condition ( I am the
treasurer). The MD Luke has is a severe type
that affects mainly boys called Duchenne.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic
disorder caused by an error in the dystrophin
gene. The condition causes progressive muscle
weakness as the muscle cells break down and die.
Unfortunately Luke is already suffering the
effects of this and has great difficulty getting
up from standing or climbing steps. By age 10
most sufferers are in a wheelchair and the life
expectancy is late teens / early twenties.
Obviously this is a charity close to my heart
but I think it fits well as a nominated charity
for the club as "muscles" are such an integral
part of running.
Since setting up the branch we have organized 3
charity Ball's, numerous golf days, parachute
jumps, a family fun day and I ran the 2007
Marathon for the cause. With the advances in
stem cell research, it is hoped a cure will be
found in the near future "

2007: Kent Association
for the Blind |
 |
During 2007, Orpington Road Runners raised money for the Kent Association For The Blind
(http://www.kab.org.uk).
We presented them with a cheque in December and
raised in excess of £700.
We should all feel proud to
have raised this much money in our first year
of coordinating fundraising efforts!
Eric Enock
has coordinated the Club's official
fundraising efforts since 2007.
If you have any thoughts or ideas as to
how we can better help our nominated
charity for the year, please contact
him, he'd be delighted to receive your
support!
